WHO IS Tammy HAYANO?
Tammy Hayano is the creator of Hanuman Yoga Retreat. Originally from California, she has been an ex-pat in various countries, as well as a world traveler for the past 14 years. Tammy took her love of travel, teaching background, and interest in transformational experiences to start Hanuman Yoga Retreat. Since its launch in 2013, Tammy has led retreats in Bali, Thailand, Mexico, Hawaii, and California.
Tammy is trained in six modalities:
- Hatha Yoga Teacher Training, White Lotus Foundation, California. 2012-2013
- JourneyDance™, with founder Toni Bergins, Massachusetts. 2012.
- QiGong/Tai Chi training under Master Wing Cheung, Singapore. 2014.
- Inner Dance Energy School, with creator Pi Villaraza, the Philippines. 2014.
- TRE/tension-trauma releasing exercises Level I Provider. 2014.
- Laughter Yoga, with Fla Geyser, 2015.
a peek into tammy’s life
#1 – Where are you originally from? Please describe in few sentences of your background, including where and how you grew up.
My dad is from Japan and my mom is from Taiwan. They both immigrated to the US to study and met there. I was born in the States and grew up in California.
#2 – How do you get to do what you are doing now?
I was an elementary school teacher for 14 years, with the bulk of my career working at international schools in Thailand, Japan, and China. I have always loved traveling and living in different countries, so leading yoga retreats around the world was a natural transition. I had a very successful career teaching, but I wasn’t happy. I felt that there was more to life than being a workaholic, having a big salary, living materialistically, and living for the weekend and vacations just to recuperate and indulge. I had completed my yoga teacher training in 2012 and decided to see where a new path would take me. Even though I didn’t have a business plan and had only been teaching twice a week in my school community, I started with where I was at and built my own business from there. It’s been a transformative journey and continues to be so. I am so grateful for this life experience.
#3 – When is a recent ‘a-ha’ moment, or a wake up call for you that you would like to share?
It’s really interesting gaining a greater sense of my self and observing my blocks, energy, and awareness. The universe is always sending me messages; I am learning to pay more attention to my intuition and seeing what is unfolding in front of me. When I feel stuck, that’s a call to take action and really notice how I can work through that.
#4 – What is your motto, or if the essence of your retreat/workshop is boiled down into one sentence – what would it be and why?
I call my retreat program “Discover Your Whole Being”. There are many parts of our selves– physical body, emotions, mental space, energy, consciousness. It’s all interconnected, but many people focus on looking good and feeling good. It’s more about developing a relationship with yourself and integrating all aspects of your being, the good parts and the challenging areas.
#5 – Who is your Museflower – something from nature that inspires you the most along your spiritual journey & why?
When I heard the expression “No mud, no lotus”, it really summed up my spiritual journey and served as an inspiration. For a long time, I was afraid of looking at my faults. I sensed that once I stepped into that space, it would be a lot of deep work that would involve pain and shame. However, without going through the ‘hell realm’, there is no transformation. Before my spiritual journey, I was living society’s idea of life. Now, I feel that I really own my life and happiness.
#6 – Why should people join a retreat with you?
Hanuman Yoga Retreat is meant to be as accessible as possible. It’s not about your physical shape, age, or level of experience in yoga. It’s a choice you have made to practice self-care and self-love. Even though it’s marketed as a yoga retreat, the experience goes far beyond that. I teach five different modalities to expose participants to various ways they can connect to themselves. I also guide evening programs as a way for people to connect to the group and as a space for sharing and healing.
